Things that Think

Course Overview
In this course, we will integrate computers into both moving mechanical toys and construction kits. Along the way, we will be discussing the role of technology in education, and principles for the successful design of children's artifacts.
This is a projects-based course -- we will build with wood, acrylic, plaster, and other materials. We will be using a laser cutter, a three-dimensional printer, and a computer-controlled milling machine, along with more traditional wood-working tools such as a scroll saw, drill press, sander, and dremels. We will explore a variety of materials, from wood and acrylic to rubber and plaster. Projects may require students to cut wood, make molds, and solder components. Previous experience is not required, but fearlessness in working with one's hands is a definite prerequisite.
This course requires self-motivation. Much of the class will be open-ended workshop time; there will also be open lab hours during which groups may come in to use the equipment to work on the projects. You and your group will be responsible for coming up with ideas, building the project, writing project reports, and project presentations.
