Leonardo and the Renaissance Engineers

GEEN 1400 F07

GEEN 1400 F05

Text

Martin Kemp, Leonardo,

Oxford University Press, 2004.

This course is taught in collaboration with  Prof. Diane Sieber’s HUEN 2843:  Leonardo da Vinci and his World.

In this section of GEEN 1400, we study the engineering  genius of Leonardo da Vinci. We will explore Leonardo’s amazing notebooks, and discuss some of his brilliant (and often far-seeing) ideas about machines and their design. The project assignments in this course will be to create working devices that illustrate or highlight Leonardo’s ideas, and to capture -- as best we can -- the aesthetic and functional qualities of da Vinci’s work.
