The Open Energy Information project, or OpenEI, is a content sharing andcollaboration community focused on accelerating our transition to cleanenergy systems. ¬†Its current platform allows for the sharing of energy data,tools, models and knowledge. ¬†By facilitating the efficient and widespreadsharing of energy-related content, we believe that OpenEI can help accelerateinnovation, development and deployment of clean energy systems.
In this talk, we’ll provide an introduction to OpenEI, its current status,future plans, and how it can serve as an example of the challenges andopportunities involved with efforts to create any domain-specific communitycommons.
Debbie Brodt-Giles manages the effort to improve public access to energyinformation and data using a wiki-based platform called Open Energy Informationor OpenEI (openei.org<http://openei.org>). ¬†For the past 15 years, Brodt-Giles has led the effortto develop, maintain, and expand advanced transportation and alternative fuelsweb sites, online tools, and information resources for the U.S. Department ofEnergy and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). ¬†In her currentrole, she is leading the Digital Assets effort at NREL to develop and expandthe OpenEI platform and working on development of an NREL registry of data,tools, and developer application program interfaces (APIs). ¬†She is alsoleading the Smart Grid team tasked with collecting, managing, and visualizingdata and results from Smart Grid Projects funded by the American Recovery andReinvestment Act (ARRA) across the country. ¬†Prior to joining NREL, Brodt-Gilesworked at Southern California Edison and coordinated projects within the DemandSide Management and System Impacts Programs, which evaluated the potentialload impacts of electric vehicles (EVs) on the utility distribution system.She was the project leader for the Electric Vehicle Trials Program and the General Motors ‚ÄöView Drive Program. ¬†Brodt-Giles has a B.S. degree inbusiness administration with a marketing emphasis from California StateUniversity at Northridge. ¬†She is also a member of the Society of Automobile Engineers (SAE).
Stuart Macmillan is a Chief Scientist at the National Renewable EnergyLaboratory. ¬†He has been active in the development of several global opencommunities and was on the founding team of JavaSoft. ¬†Stuart holds a M.S. andPh.D. from Stanford University.
Jamey Wood is the lead architect and software engineer for the OpenEI projectat the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. ¬†Formerly, Jamey was employed atSun Microsystems for over ten years. ¬†There, he worked on a variety of projectsincluding the sun.com<http://sun.com> website, community management for the GlassFish application server, and development of the “service tags” mechanism fortracking customer installations of all Sun software and hardware products.Jamey holds a B.S. degree in computer science from the University of Colorado at Boulder.
