THIS IS THE PLAN FOR CONDUCTING THE ACTIVITY...THE STUDENT HANDOUT IS ATTACHED. IT WAS ORIGINALLY WRITTEN AS A SUB PLAN.
A. Explain that students will be working in groups for the next 2 days with a common
goal of increasing their basic understanding and familiarity with protest movements,
reforms accomplished, and protest methods. They will be using a variety of resources
in the class and will have a finished "product" due by the end of class
on Friday.
B. Distribute the attached sheet which explains the project and carefully review it. The biggest "content" expectation is around the 4 basic questions they must answer for each protest movement. Explain that this is the first piece of work I will see and that I expect the highest of quality...they should look around the room again to see what that means in this class! All expectations are listed on the sheet including assessment info. Show them the "People's History" Timeline as an example of the layout for their projects.
C. Form groups of 5 students (if my numbers are correct, there should be one or two groups with 4 students) My suggestion for this activity is to please COUNT OFF BY 5 TO MAKE THE GROUPS...IF THEY COMPLAIN, BLAME IT ON ME...BUT I WANT TO MIX STUDENTS UP A BIT AT THIS POINT IN THE QUARTER.
D. Initial work should be researching...there are enough resources in the room that there isn't any need to go to computer rooms or libraries at this point. My guess is that most of today should be research with the bulk of Friday dedicated to poster creation. Carla will know where paper and supplies are located. No need for typing of text...neat printing is good. Lots of coaching re. content and spelling, etc. needed!
E. Be sure to collect and organize ALL resources before end of class. Dismiss class at 10:45 with reminder to find out whatever they don't know already about the content for this activity.
F. (SECOND DAY) Roll, etc. and continue activity from yesterday with emphasis on quality and completion. Group work will need to be cooperative and effective to meet expectations and deadline. Push this!!
G. When all are completed...and if some finish early, be sure that they really have met all expectations...post on the wall over existing posters as needed.
H. If time (and I doubt it) ask about which seemed to be most important movements, most effective methods, etc.
