This simulation is a representation of the impact automobiles had in the United States during the 20th Century. Please read the descriptions of our Agents and their behaviors so that you can use the simulation more effectively. Here are some directions to help you use the simulation
Start your city: Use the arrow keys to take the horseman where you want the center of your city to be and hit the "Return" key to start your city.
Create roads: Once your city starts developing, select the street from the gallery and start adding roads in your simulation. Make sure you end your streets at the edge of the worksheet, where car sources/sinks are located (hidden underneath the forest and dirt). Our roads are 'smart' and try to connect to road pieces next to them. Make sure that all your road pieces are connected, otherwise the cars will have trouble driving on them.
Add traffic lights: To avoid accidents and control traffic add traffic lights to your intersections.
Visualize the pollution: Use the "S" key to show the pollution clouds over the houses and the "H" key to hide it.
Add parks: To decrease pollution, add parks.
Note: The roads change from dirt roads to regular roads (when the city develops enough). The applet version of our simulation does not handle road changing very well (the changed roads do not connect as they should). You can fix this by manually laying road pieces on top of the non-connected roads. Better yet, run the simulation in AgentSheets to observe the right behavior.
