Heinrich Schwarz
Techno-Territories and Smart Spaces
Abstract
This talk will present aspects of my research
on the intersection of technology and space. The first part will introduce a
study on recent transformations in office design, in particular ethnographic
research of a flexible non-territorial office. It raises the question about changes
in the social organization and status hierarchy of organizations that such office
concepts may affect. In a second part I will offer preliminary reflections on
some social dimensions of location-aware technologies; these include new opportunities
for research, the creation of spatial knowledge, and a potentially changing experience
of space.
Heinrich Schwarz is an assistant professor in the Department of Communication
at CU Boulder. His works on social and cultural dimensions of emerging information
technologies has focused on mobile, flexible, and virtual office concepts,
mediated communication, and changing spatial regimes. He draws on science & technology
studies, communication, and cultural anthropology.
