Virtual Gestures: Analysing the role of embodiment and nonverbal
behavior in avatar-mediated communication.

Abstract

The lecture addresses basic conceptual and methodological problems
concerning the implementation of nonverbal communication channels in
computer-mediated communication and human computer interaction. An
avatar research platform, the so called Virtual Communication
Environment (VCE), will be introduced that allows for basic
research on nonverbal behavior and for the evaluation of avatars and
embodied conversational agents in different application
scenarios. Specific research paradigms will be described
using examples from our current research.
