The use of wearable computers as spatial cognition aids

Abstract

Human beings live and work in large and complex environments. It is
often difficult for individuals to perceive and understand the structure
of these environments. However, the formation of an accurate and reliable
cognitive map, a mental model of the environment, is vital for optimal
navigation and coordination.

In this talk, I will discuss studies I have performed to examine the use
of wearable computers as spatial cognition aids. These wearable computers
use 3D visualization, tracking devices such as GPS, and eyeglass mounted
displays to help users understand the surrounding environment.

These studies show that wearable computers can be an effective spatial
cognition aide. However, factors such as mental rotation, distraction,
and attention must be taken into account when presenting spatial
information to a wearable computer user.
