Meta-design as an emerging design culture: theories, applications and issues
(Download PDF)

Abstract

Meta-design is a term that has been used in relation to the use of information technologies with reference to art, cultural theories, and design practices since the 1980s.

Meta-design is neither an established discipline nor a coherent theory. It is rather the expression of a set of concerns and intentions, composing the fabric of an emergent design culture. A single definition of meta-design does not exist yet, and the notion has produced different understandings, objectives and methodologies, in different application fields.

The talk will introduce theories and practices of meta-design in different domains, such as: software engineering, information design, industrial design, socio-technical design, bio-technological design, interactive art, and architecture. It will provide a review of different applications and an indication of the main development trends.
