The King is dead, long live the king: Making Flash do what Java promised.

Abstract

While there are still positive stories to tell about using Java to build applications and server side computation the verdict about using Java to create interactive Web pages is out: Java applets load slowly - if they load at all - and are highly dependent on browsers and platforms. Meanwhile, Flash, an authoring tool for interactive Web pages, is rapidly taking over. In spite of being shunned by the academic computer science community Flash has matured into a full fledged programming and authoring tool to create interactive content ranging from simple animations to business applications and arcade games. Repenning will show new Flash generator tools and demonstrate the results of pushing Flash to its limits by using it to build complex agent-based simulations running on PDAs.
