MobiLearn: Supporting learning in mobile and distributed workforces

Abstract

Organizations are dependent on organizational knowledge and competence and managing this is a crucial matter. The importance for professionals to continuously learn is widely recognized. People live progressively more mobile lives, spending time in diverse places and moving between and through different contexts, both for vocational and private purposes. Professionals are both locally mobile and traveling between offices and other work locations. Mobile workers need opportunities for competence development adapted to their mobility.

Mobility takes you through places that all have varied features and possibilities. To be able to design mobile devices and services for use in these environments we need to investigate the design implications that these contexts impose on new mobile artifacts and services.

Currently I am summing up a study where distributed role-playing have been used to help a group of six IT-consultants to reflect and discuss their current work practice. I will give you a short overview of the application we used as well as presenting some of the preliminary findings from the study. Finally I will try to raise some question concerning how we work with learning for mobile professionals to get some feedback from the group.
