The human use of computers can be seen as attempts, with various levels of success, to implement distributed cognition. Successfully providing computational support to education depends largely on configuring the application to the user, context, and use. In my presentation I will discuss the fundamental concepts of doing rapid personalised configuration of content with a standards based approach. I will illustrate these concepts with the EU4ALL project which provides support to content personalisation of eLearning material for people with varying abilities and needs.
Stefan Carmien is a senior researcher at the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Information Technology. His PhD thesis was the development and evaluation of a PC based script authoring and palmtop prompting system to support persons with cognitive disabilities and caregivers living more independently. Most recently he has been involved in several European wide projects involving providing equal access to distance learning environments. His research interests include: Human-computer interaction (HCI); assistive technology (particularly for persons with cognitive disabilities); social analysis and ethnographic studies of socio-technical systems; mobile technologies; contextually aware technologies; “everyday” artifacts; situated cognition; technology adoption.
