Beyond the ownership of handhelds: one-to-one
active learning with ubiquitous learning minds
Abstract
Technology-enhanced learning researchers increasingly
notice the impact of
change of learning tools. The notion “one-to-one”(http://www.g1to1.org/)
or
OLPC(one laptop per child) was therefore highlighted in terms of the tools
(i.e. pencils or computing devices) and materials (textbooks or online
information) students own for learning. One-to-one (1:1) learning refers to
the scenario where students bring handheld devices fitted with wireless
communication capabilities and apply these devices for various learning
activities. However, as computational power is becoming everywhere, the
ownership of devices and the mobility of the personally-owned devices are
not the only critical issues to transcend learning into active,
collaborative, creative and integrated social explorative experiences. In
this talk, I'll present the ecological changes in our classrooms that may
inform the design of our educational environment and pedagogies. Pedagogical
and environmental issues that concerning the cutivation of ubiquitous
learning mind such as personal autonomy, active engagement, personal
relevance, collaboration, and epistemic pluralism will be discussed.
