Anticipating pedagogical challenges in interdisciplinary
computing experiences
Abstract
With the increasing use of computational methods
in all sciences comes the need to prepare computer science students for interdisciplinary
collaboration. However, there is a dearth of curriculum models for experiencing
and learning about productive interdisciplinary computing. To explore the challenges,
we conducted a high school bioinformatics workshop aimed at orienting students
to the “soft skills” of collaborative work and evaluating the promise
of wiki-like supportive technologies. The experience revealed the need to anticipate
three key pedagogical concerns: personal relevance, specialization pressures,
and individualization.
