Spring Semester 2000

Evaluation

Grading and Assessments Policy and Guidelines

There will be no final exam in this course; we will use the last two class meetings of the course for the presentation of the semester projects during these class sessions.

The grades will be determined as follows:

  1. 25% for participation (includes class and website participation; to attend classes is therefore an important part of the course);
  2. 20% for small assignments,
  3. 25% for the critical reviews of the books/articles and class presentation, and
  4. 30% for the semester project.

The notion of self-assessment is central to self-directed learning. For this reason the course introduces the opportunity for each member to be able to assess her/his performance for the semester. The self-assessment will be combined with the faculty’s assessment for the final grade of each member’s performance in the course.

These two assessments will be combined as follows:

  • the student self assessments will reflect 20% and
  • the faculty’s 80% of the final grade in the course.

Guidelines for Self Assessment:

  1. Evaluate your performance on each of the four activities mentioned above along a 1-5 scale
    (1=deficient, 2=average, 3=good, 4=very good, 5=outstanding).
  2. Based on your self-evaluations reflect on how would you go about reinforcing those areas where you are doing good or better, and how would you go about redirecting those areas in which you find your performance average or below.
