Course Description
CSCL (usually Computer Support for Collaborative Learning) is an emerging area of research in educational technology. It represents a departure from previous work in instructional technology in that it embraces a view of learning as a largely social phenomenon, reflecting the influences of Neo-Piagetian developmental psychology, cultural psychology and Cultural-Historical Theory of Activity, and notions of Distributed and Situated Cognition. In this seminar, we will explore some of these theories and examine some of the methods of instruction that have been developed to foster collaborative learning. We will also investigate ways that technology can and could be used to support learning in collaborative settings. An important theme of the seminar will be to identify the important research issues in CSCL and appropriate methods for investigating them. In such discussions we will draw in particular upon the research literatures of the socially-oriented sciences (e.g., Anthropology, Sociology, Linguistics, Social and Cultural Psychology, Communication Studies).
