>Gerhard-
>Greetings! Since classes begin Monday, the purpose of this message is to
alert you to our plans for student access during the semester. With over
$6M worth of equipment in ITLL, we are very concerned about security.
>Our plan is to require anyone (student or faculty) who desires after-hours
(i.e. weekend or evening) access to ITLL, or a computer logon, to first
attend an orientation session we will offer. Students and faculty will
need to sign a "contract" agreeing to follow proper conduct when using the
ITLL. They will then be given a PIN and logon password. The PIN will
allow them to use their new Buff One-Card for access to ITLL itself, as
well as appropriate spaces under limited access within ITLL (e.g. first
year projects rooms, Quantum Simulation Lab, etc.).
>[Note: faculty will not receive their new Buff One-Card, which will
replace your current ID card, until later. If you desire after-hours
access to ITLL before you receive your new card, we can program our card
readers to read another magnetic stripe card you may have, such as a credit
card. Contact Brad Dunkin (bradley.dunkin) or Jim Avery (avery@hedgehog)].
>Student Ambassadors will be conducting orientation sessions and collecting
signed contracts. We ask your cooperation in allocating approximately 30
min. of one of your classes during the first week for this purpose. PLEASE
E-MAIL ME WITH A CONVENIENT TIME AND DATE AND I WILL ARRANGE FOR AN
AMBASSADOR TO VISIT YOUR CLASS.
>Beginning the second week, the Ambassadors will also be conducting regular
orientation sessions for those students who missed the first orientation
session.
>For the first week or two of class, we cannot offer after-hours (i.e.
evening or week-end) access to the ITL Laboratory, except for those classes
scheduled after normal hours of opening.
>As soon as possible, we intend to be on the steady-state, regular schedule
as follows:
>Thanks for your understanding and cooperation as we strive to achieve a
reasonable balance between access and security. ITLL is a first-class
facility, and we intend to keep it that way!
