The Discovery Learning Initiative and Discovery Learning Center: Taking Stock
Gerhard Fischer

Abstract.

As we all can see when we walk into the Engineering Center: the Discovery Learning Center (DLC) is becoming a reality. L3D is looking forward with great expectations to this exciting achievement and development of the College of Engineering, especially because we will get new space in the DLC.

The underlying "theory" for the DLC is the Discovery Learning Initiative (DLI): it explores new approaches towards learning and towards learning environments.

In honor of these exciting developments, we will use the first L3D meeting in the year 2001 to take stake and to revisit and explore the following themes:

  1. the relationship between DLI and DLC
  2. further ideas, plans, objective from the College DLI/DLC leadership (I hope that the invited guests will come)
  3. plans of L3D to exploit the unique opportunities of the DLI/DLC, including thoughts about the Coleman Showcase Lab (Ernie Arias and Hal Eden), Beyond Educational Computing (Mike Eisenberg), SSS.

To provide some context, I have collected and structured some of the past memos, discussions, questions and answers that were developed in the past about the DLI/DLC.
